The message comes as many will be finalising their summer holiday plans, leaving families wishing to go camping with their own tent a choice of driving long distances or staying closer to home.
Will Goodridge, founder of I Spy Camping, explains ?If you want to go skiing, all you need to do is look up the airline?s sports equipment policy and follow their official guidelines, but if you want to take your tent, nothing is mentioned. So before booking your flights, a call to customer services has to be made, then hope the agent you get through to has notes on hand to help you with your enquiry. If you manage to get over that hurdle, you need to pray that when you get to the airport, checking-in of your tent is handled as you had been led to expect. I know from experience!?
I Spy Camping has written to each airline operating flights to European destinations explaining the problem and recommending these 3 key actions:
1.????Make the policy on travelling with tents clear on their website
2.????Charge a fair price for carriage of a family tent
3.????Ensure the check-in and collection process is simple
Goodridge continues ?For those living in the northern half of the British Isles and Ireland, a camping holiday in Europe is a two or three day car and ferry journey just to France, and the same back. For those living in the southern half, a camping trip to the south of France, north Spain or Italy will take the same time, making it a tiresome journey for many with kids. Compare that to a morning or afternoon of travelling if you fly. Surely airlines are missing out on additional revenue.?
Between now and when airlines make their tent policy clearer, information on choosing and making the most of your drive through France can be found on http://www.ispycamping.com
